Susan Marie Vaughn Bailey currently serves as the Career Coach through Louisiana Workforce Commission at the St. James Business and Career Solutions Center in Vacherie. While holding this position for over 20 years, Susan has been an advocate for training and assisting local residents with finding jobs throughout the River Parish area. She began her professional career as a Para Professional with various schools through St. James Parish School Board. It was during her 10-year tenure while working in the school system is where she found the love of not only being a public servant but also an activist for her community and the children in which she served. While there, she served as a 4-H and Beta Club Sponsor, Cheer Sponsor, and Tutor. Susan served as a mentor for many of her students and she always encouraged them to strive for excellence.
Over the years, Susan has been dedicated and committed to serving the community throughout the River Parish area. She has served as a board member for several organizations such as the Lionel Washington Pro Football Camp Committee, St. James Parish Community Advisory Panel (CAP), St. James Parish Litter Board, Good Children Society, Next 25, and St. James Parish Work Ready Leadership Team. Susan is a member of the St. James Catholic Church Gospel Choir and currently serves as the choir’s recording secretary. Also, Susan has led the effort as the committee chairperson for the annual Night Out Against Crime in her Vacherie neighborhood. Also, Susan serves as a certified Elections Commissioner for St. James Parish and has organized an annual Voter Registration Drive in St. James Parish.
One of Susan’s biggest passion is to promote and to encourage physical fitness for residents throughout the River Parishes. Susan is the founder of the “Steppin’ Out and Shapin’ Up” Line Dance Group that has been active since 2012. Susan has volunteered her services for groups from New Orleans to Baton Rouge as she continues to motivate individuals to exercise through line dancing. Over the years, hundreds of individuals have participated in her line dance sessions. Recently, Susan was featured in the L’Observateur Newspaper for conducting special line dance sessions to promote Alzheimer’s Awareness and Breast Cancer Awareness.
Susan was honored to become a member of the Mystic Krewe of Nyx which was established to unite women of diverse backgrounds for fun, friendship, and merriment of the Mardi Gras season. The Mystic Krewe of Nyx has earned the honor of the biggest parade in history where the all-female krewe (over 3383 riders) has broken barriers for the Super Krewes and has raised the bar for parades everywhere.
Susan enjoys serving as an event planner and wedding coordinator, traveling, cheering on her Saints, dancing and blowing her famous whistle.
