Damian “Big D” Ursin, a native of Gramercy, was born to Wilbert “Toot” & Dari Ann Parquette Ursin. He grew up along with his older brother Wil “Tanooney” Ursin. Damian attended Gramercy Elementary & graduated from Lutcher High School in 2000.
During high school Damian lettered in baseball, football and basketball; but he was most passionate about baseball. He later earned a baseball scholarship to Southern University in Baton Rouge where he held the position of pitcher. In 2001, 2002 & 2003 the team won the SWAC Championship and earned NCAA tournament bids. Damian was one of the most declarative bullpen pitchers in the conference and Southern University’s history.
In 2003 Damian was drafted to the Cincinnati Reds where he played in their farm system for five years. He was then sidelined with a career ending arm injury.
Throughout his college and baseball career Damian held tight to his high school sweetheart Tatum Mitchell. On Valentines Day 2009 he made her his wife and lifelong companion.
Damian is currently employed by Shell Chemical in Norco, La. and is a member of St. Mark Baptist Church in Mt. Airy, La.
Damian spends numerous hours training young prospective baseball and softball players. During this time he has the opportunity to mentor these young guys and girls in real life situations, along with baseball and softball. He voluntarily served as Head Coach of the Purple Wave Softball Team and Assistant Coach of East St. John High School’s Baseball Team. This allowed Damian an opportunity to network with former teammates and coaches to help obtain over twenty scholarships for area players. Damian believes that along his journey many people helped and assisted him and that it is no more than fitting that he does the same.
Damian’s favorite bible verse is, Philippians 4:13 “ I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” When asked how he’d liked to be remembered, he said, “As an honest, unselfish, hard-working Child Of God.”
